The importance of family traditions should never be underestimated. When done correctly, traditions can serve as touchstones of childhood and provide family members of various generations with cherished memories.

While it is important to build traditions around holidays and major events, some of the most memorable traditions can also be the simplest: every-day occurrences that take on an increased level of significance over the years. One of the least expensive family activities that can easily grow into a treasured tradition is also one of the most fun and enduring: family game night. The trick to a good family game night is keeping things fun and varied. Here are some suggestions:

Board Games

Card Games

In addition to classic card games such as poker, War and Crazy Eights, kids will also enjoy card games like Uno, Skip-Bo and Go Fish.

Video Games

The new generation of game consoles like the Nintendo Wii include many games that are fun for the whole family, including various sports and carnival style games. These games are ideal for family game nights since they can accommodate up to four players at a time and are designed to be easy enough for young kids (and parents) to enjoy.

As a new high school graduate on the way to college, you may be faced with a number of challenges. These can include living on your own for the first time and adapting to the fast pace of college life.

So, how do you successfully adapt and get on the path to a successful college career? Sure, you say things like “I’m going to earn my degree and get a successful job” and other such platitudes, but you still need to take specific steps to make your college time fruitful.

Use a daily journal or notebook to help you process all the new information you will be experiencing and learning. Higher education is not just about the classroom; you will be gaining life experiences outside of the formal learning process. You will find yourself in new social situations as a part of this experience.

Try out new patterns that will better fit the new demands on your time. Experiment with different study hours and try to socialize with new people. Change your lifestyle to meet the expectations of a different school experience, as well as a new social life.

Go back and read that journal regularly. Look at the changes and events that you have experienced. By reviewing all the activities you’ve already successfully navigated, you can gain a better understanding of your current life that can help you with any future problems and situations.

Be patient and give it some time. Changes are sometimes difficult, and by giving yourself time to adjust to those changes, you’ll feel more comfortable.

Why Traditions? There Is No Logical Answer To This Question

Why are traditions so important? Why do people attach so much importance to traditions? There seems to be no logical explanation for the same. Each and every civilization has its own set of traditions and there are very few that have survived the passage of time. However, no civilization has ever acknowledged the futility of traditions and have decided to do away with it.

For a long time, it was considered traditional for men to wear pants and women to wear skirts or frocks. What is the logic behind this? Why is it not the other way around? Why is society so worried about who wears what?

Once we start focusing on the minute points we realize that there is absolutely no logic involved. Traditions can well be called the autocratic laws determined by the social setup. There is no discussion, no debate and certainly no representative participation. In some cases, the rich set up the traditions while in other cases, the masses or the mob decides what the traditions ought to be.

One thing is common-no society likes its tradition to be violated. Even progressive civilizations like the western worlds invariably end up with funny traditions. The very fact that western civilizations consider themselves nontraditional is a traditional in itself. Any person who speaks in favor of these ideas and notions is ridicule.

Complete freedom and independence at an individual level does not exist. One may very well conclude that it is the price that man has to pay for living in society. Whatever the function it performs, the fact that traditions continues means that it is essential and advisable to be complied with.

  3. Document everything no matter how inconsequential. You never  if that one fact can help you later on down the road. Start a family tree (you can find a free one to start at FamilySearch.org) and begin writing names starting with you and any siblings at the bottom, then work your way up.
